Having returned from my trip to Oman to play all of the grass golf courses in the country, I can now put together my list of Oman golf courses. The below list is ordered in my personal preference of golf course.

1. Al Mouj Golf (Championship Course)

It was not hard to work out which course was going to be at the top of my list. Al Mouj Golf (Championship Course) has been a part of the European Tour since 2018 and has been well received by the professionals who played it. It’s easy to see why when you play it yourself. With some stunning scenery and precision required with your tee shots, it’s a great challenge.  The course is in fantastic condition and you will enjoy your time here without doubt!

2. Ghala Golf Club

Ghala Golf Club really starts to get special as you make your way up to the tee box for the 4th hole. With the view spreading out before you, this is where the fairways start to get narrow. You need to be hitting a straight club off the tees on this course to hit the fairways! The condition is excellent and sitting on the decking area of the clubhouse looking at the 18th green is a nice relaxing way to finish your day on the course.

3. Ras Al Hamra Golf Club

Ras Al Hamra Golf Club has done a great job in making a nine hole course into a totally different experience for both the front nine and the back nine. With the clever use of different pins, different tee boxes, and different greens on some holes, you never play the same hole twice. The condition of the course was again perfect and made for a very enjoyable round.

4. Jebel Sifah Golf Course

Jebel Sifah Golf Course is a beautiful resort style course set an hour from Muscat through the mountains. Situated beside the sea, it has a heavenly beauty about it. The course itself has some long holes but wide fairways with not too many hazards, so for experienced golfers it may not be a huge challenge.  But for someone looking to just have a nice relaxing round free of stress it’s perfect.

5. Al Mouj Golf (Academy Course)

This was my first time playing an academy course at Al Mouj Golf (Academy Course) and I really enjoyed it! I could see how this course would improve your iron playing skills and to be honest it was a lovely relaxing way to finish my day after playing the Championship Course. It’s a nice way to have a friendly competition with a few mates without worrying about the complications of a full length course.

6. Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club

Unfortunately, there has to be a bottom to every list, and in its current condition, no matter how many courses are in Oman, Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club will always be at the bottom. The course has a great layout, but its condition has deteriorated so much it is not enjoyable. There is a severe lack of maintenance here that needs to be resolved urgently; otherwise this course will be lost forever.

Where to stay in Oman for a golfing trip

I would definitely recommend the Hotel Muscat Holiday for your stay. Not only is it a great hotel, but it has a couple of bars and a nightclub as well. This is something that is not in abundance in Muscat. If you book a dry hotel you may find yourself getting taxis quite a distance to enjoy a beer in the evenings.

It is in an excellent location to access all the golf courses without traveling too far, (apart from Jebel Sifah which is outside Muscat itself). It will take you less than half an hour to each course, (again, apart from Jebel Sifah).

The food in the Sports Bar in the hotel is excellent and the staff are welcoming and very friendly. In the Sports Bar are a snooker table, two pool tables, and a foosball table so you have other activities at your disposal apart from golf.

For the smokers there is a smoking room in the bar. So you don’t have to keep going down to the lobby outside the hotel every time you need a puff.

Make sure and say hello to the man in charge of the bar Rajendra, he’ll make sure your glass is kept full when you need it!

Planning your golfing trip to Oman

If you are planning on playing all the courses and want to do it at a relaxed pace, then it is best to do it during the weekdays. It is also cheaper rates in most courses then. As there are 5 main courses (plus one academy course) it was perfect to do all of them in one week. Here is my itinerary I followed during my week in Oman.

Day 1 (Saturday) – Arrival
Day 2 (Sunday)   – Al Mouj Golf (Championship Course) in the morning and Al Mouj Golf (Academy Course) in the afternoon (20mins from Hotel Muscat Holiday)
Day 3 (Monday) – Ghala Golf Club (10mins from Hotel Muscat Holiday)
Day 4 (Tuesday) – Jebel Sifah Golf Course (1 hr from Hotel Muscat Holiday)
Day 5 (Wednesday) – Muscat Hills Golf & Country Club (20mins from Hotel Muscat Holiday)
Day 6 (Thursday) – Ras Al Hamra Golf Club (20mins from Hotel Muscat Holiday)
Day 7 (Friday) – Departure

Traveling around Oman

For traveling around to the courses, it’s best to hire a car at the airport. Traffic in Oman is very well behaved compared to other areas in the Gulf region and you will have no problems once you have GPS.

Internet in Oman

For GPS you can get a temporary internet sim card (Omantel) at the airport which will cost you OMR10 for 10 days. This will give you more than enough data for a week in Oman.

Timings of play

Timings of play are totally up to you but I found it best to play the courses at around 0900 (1000 in the case of Jebel Sifah due to the travel distance) and I was finished by lunch time. The afternoon and evening is yours then to do as you please.

And finally….

Once everything is booked and arranged, all that’s left is to enjoy your time in Oman. It is a beautiful country with great people. You will not be disappointed to have gone there. Apart from its golf courses, you can enjoy the mountains, or the stunning coastline. Visit the local souqs and see some of the attractions Oman has to offer. Whatever you do, you will want to come back again.
